Dalit boy’s death triggers violence
An eerie calm prevails at Manur village, 10 km away from Palani, where the murder of a Dalit by caste Hindus provoked the other side to resort to burning government buses, police jeep and a fire service vehicle. The police has deployed a 50-plus contingent to prevent further damage.
The trouble started when Vasukidevi, a 22-year-old postgraduate student and daughter of Kasilingam, 53, eloped with a Dalit, Sanglidurai, 25, a car driver employed locally.Kasilingam lodged a complaint with the Keeranur station, under which the village falls, but the police could not intervene, as both were of marriageable age.
On Friday around 5 pm, Kasilingam, along with his wife Anjali Devi, 41, and her brothers Kannan, 32 and Marudeeswaran, 42, went to Sanglidurai’s house apparently to take back Vasukidevi. They didn’t find her, but by then Sanglidurai’s relatives had assembled and a quarrel ensued. Sanglidurai’s kin Rajasekaran was stabbed.
He died on the way to Palani GH triggering violent response from his relatives who torched TNSTC buses, a police jeep and a fire service vehicle. The police arrested the four — Kasilingam, his wife, brother-in-laws and registered a case under section 302 against them. The police also arrested 13 members from the Dalit community for arson and causing damage to public property. The situation is under control. Around 50 policemen have been deployed.
