'Thrashed' dalit girl taken to Ahmedabad

RAJKOT: Sixteen-year-old dalit girl Rupa Savjibhai Sondarva, who was injured after being allegedly thrashed in the city by police a few days ago, has been taken to Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad on Sunday for further treatment.
Rupa, a resident of Ambedkarnagar, was one of the persons who was allegedly thrashed by police after violence broke out in Thorala subsequent to the murder of Gunu Rathod. Local residents were on the streets to protest the murder and police to bring the situation under control beat them up, injuring several of them, sources alleged.
Dalit rights activist Raju Solanki, who was in the city with human rights activists and had met the victims' families, said thaqt Rupa was cooking when some policemen entered her house after breaking the doors of the adjoining house and from the terrace.
"Rupa was thrashed by policemen so brutally that her spine broke. She was taken to Rajkot Civil Hospital, but was discharged and is bedridden since then. Doctors have advised her not to walk," Solanki said.
Earlier on Saturday, a member of National Commission for Scheduled Castes Raju Parmar visited Thorala and met the kin of deceased Gunu Rathod and others. Parmar said police had committed grave atrocities on innocent people and asked the local authorities to submit an action taken report within the next few days.
"The local residents are living in fear after the police lathicharge. Police did not spare evenwomen and children during their brutal charge at the innocent people," Solanki alleged.
